Dr. Tulio Bertorini, M.D.

Dr. Bertorini earned an undergraduate degree from San Marcos University School of Sciences, and a Doctorate of Medicine from San Marcos University School of Medicine. He served as an intern for Hospital del Empleado in Lima, Peru and Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. After finishing a residency in neurology at Georgetown University School of Medicine VAMC and Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and special training program in Electrodiagnostic Procedures at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Dr. Bertorini gained further experience as a postgraduate Clinical Associate at NINCDS (National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Diseases and Stroke) in the National Institute of Health. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the American Association of Electrodiagnodiagnostic Medicine, and the Subspecialty Boards in Clinical Neurophysiology and Neurorehabiliation.

Some of Dr. Bertorini’s most recently published work in books includes a chapter on Malignant Hyperthermia in Neuromuscular Disorders in Clinical Practice, editor of Clinical Evaluation and Diagnostic Tests for Neuromuscular Disorders, and a chapter on Peripheral Sensory Conduction Studies in Clinical Neurophysiology of Peripheral Nerve Diseases. In the past three years, Dr. Bertorini has published research in Journal of Clinical Neuromuscular Disease, Neurology, Comprehensive Therapy, and The Journal of Clinical Neuromuscular Disorders (among others). He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Neriomuscular Diseases, reviews manuscripts for several journals and grant for the FDA. Dr. Betroini is also an examiner of the America Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine. His research interests include muscular dystrophy and disorders of nerve and muscle, particularly myasthenia gravis and autoimmune neuropathies.

Dr. Bertorini is a member of many professional organizations including the American Academy of Neurology, the American College of Physicians, Memphis and Shelby County Medical Society, the Wernikes Medical Society, the American Federation for Clinical Research, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Neurorehabilitation, and the World Muscle Society. He has served as director and co-director of the Residency Training Program for the Department of Neurology of the University of Tennessee for over two decades. The Tennessee Academy of Neurology elected Dr. Bertorini as its President in 2003. Dr. Bertorini is also the director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association Clinic, and a member of the professional advisory boards for the Parkinson’s Disease Association, the Memphis Epilepsy Foundation, and the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Memphis Magazine named Dr. Bertorini "Best Doctor in Memphis" in 2001, 2002, and 2003. He has also been honored by the classes of 1993 and 1994 at the University of Tennessee with a Golden Apple award and earned an Apple Award in 2006 from the Board of the muscular Dystrophy Association. The Church Health Center and the Shelby County Medical Society honored Dr. Bertorini for his work with the disadvantaged of Memphis. Since 1978, Dr. Bertorini has received over six hundred and fifty thousand dollars in grants from such bodies as the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the University of Tennessee, the National Institute of Health, and Children’s National Medical Center of Washington, DC.
